During the last several years of economic uncertainty in Alaska, GCI has been steadfast in its commitment to improving connectivity throughout the state. We’ve continued to invest in Alaska’s vital communications infrastructure at a time when others were unable, or unwilling, to make that commitment.
Over the past decade, GCI has invested more than $117 million in network upgrades just in the Fairbanks area. Continued investment in Alaska’s Golden Heart City keeps the community on the cutting edge of connectivity.
Whether you’re a small business owner, aspiring social media mogul, or an Amazon enthusiast, faster internet speeds ensure a better online experience and higher quality of life. It’s not all fun and games, though. Better connectivity also paves the way for safer and more educated communities. It allows schools to take part in distance learning and gives teachers easy access to the latest education resources online. Hospitals and clinics around the state can better serve Alaskans through the telehealth network.
Over the past several months, GCI completed three new fiber/coax builds bringing our industry-leading services to an additional 300 residents in the Fairbanks and North Pole areas. Nearly 23,000 Fairbanks homes have access to 1 GIG internet speeds. That’s a substantial portion of the roughly 80 percent of Alaskans who are able to get those speeds. Alaska is on the forefront of 1 GIG connectivity in the U.S. Soon, Fairbanksans will see even more GCI investment in the community.
GCI’s Merhar store will get a complete remodel and expansion this year including space for us to better serve our small business customers. We are also developing buildout plans to support community growth in anticipation of the arrival of the F-35s and will be increasing our footprint by expanding our fiber network into even more Fairbanks neighborhoods. When we’re able to deliver internet to homes through either fiber or coax, customers can take full advantage of GCI’s 1 GIG speeds. In addition to neighborhood projects, GCI is finalizing a plan to improve the reliability of our statewide network with the installation of additional fiber to our Fairbanks Earth Station.
While infrastructure buildout and capital investment is obviously important to GCI, we also strive to be a good neighbor, investing in organizations and causes that strengthen the social fabric of communities across the state. Over the past 5 years, GCI has donated more than $10 million in cash, products, scholarships and grants to Alaska organizations, like the GCI Suicide Prevention Grant, United Way, and Special Olympics Alaska.
Over the past five years, GCI has given nearly $665,000 to Fairbanks organizations. From the Greater Fairbanks Chamber and Fairbanks Economic Development Corporation to the local food bank and rescue mission, GCI and its employees are greatly invested in the economic and social well-being of the community.
Our employees give more than just donations. Every GCI employee is given 16 hours of paid community service leave to volunteer. With that time, employees can give their time to support organizations and causes that spark their passions. Whether it’s through the gift of time or a donation at a fundraiser, we at GCI believe giving back at both the corporate and individual levels helps cultivate strong, vibrant communities. We are Alaska born and raised; we live and work in Fairbanks; and, most importantly, we love Fairbanks. Our investment and commitment in Alaska’s Golden Heart City is stronger than ever. Ultimately, GCI strives to be more than just a cable company. We are your neighbors, your friends, and – hopefully – your communications gurus. We are committed to creating a brighter and better-connected tomorrow for Fairbanks.
