GCI has partnered with Alaska Center for the Performing Arts and Broadway Alaska to bring Broadway to classrooms in Alaska. We are offering educators the opportunity to stream the musical “Come From Away” in their classrooms. They can also join an exclusive webinar with the show’s design team, cast, and crew on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m.
The arts play an important role in education by fostering creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence. They offer a unique avenue for self-expression, encouraging students to explore diverse perspectives and engage with complex ideas.
“Come From Away” is a heartwarming and inspiring Broadway musical. It tells the remarkable true story of what happened in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks. The show depicts how the town embraced and welcomed stranded travelers from around the world after 38 planes were grounded there.

Through its touching narrative and memorable music, “Come From Away” highlights the kindness, resilience, and unity that can emerge during times of crisis. The musical by Irene Sankoff and David Hein has received critical acclaim. It is praised for its storytelling, cast, and uplifting portrayal of humanity in difficult times.
The webinar will feature Tony Award winner Beowulf Boritt talking about set design, Shalyn Clark discussing stage management, and a cast member talking about performing. The panelists will discuss career opportunities, how they got started in show business, and their role on Broadway. They will also share advice with students about pursuing their goals related to the arts. We are excited to share this opportunity with educators and students and get backstage with “Come From Away.”
If you’re an educator and are interested in participating with your class, you can register here. The webinar is recommended for grades five and up.
